Laboratory use

What BAC water is used for.

Sterile water preserved with 0.9% benzyl alcohol — a mild antimicrobial that inhibits microbial growth, making it the standard solvent for reconstituting lyophilized materials in laboratory research.

Reconstitution

The standard solvent for bringing lyophilized research peptides and compounds into solution.

Multi-draw research

The 0.9% benzyl alcohol suppresses microbial growth, supporting repeated draws from a single vial.

Diluting stock

Used to dilute concentrated stock solutions down to working concentrations for in-vitro work.

General lab solvent

A clean, GC-verified, endotoxin-screened aqueous solvent for everyday bench research.

⚠ For research use only — not for human consumption. Bacteriostatic water is supplied strictly as a laboratory reagent. Nothing here is a claim of any therapeutic effect or intended use in humans or animals. Handle in accordance with your institution's protocols.
Composition & method

What makes it bacteriostatic

Bacteriostatic water is water for laboratory use preserved with 0.9% benzyl alcohol (CAS 100-51-6). Benzyl alcohol is a mild antimicrobial that inhibits the growth of common bacteria — which is what lets a single vial be drawn from more than once, unlike preservative-free sterile water, which is single-use. Every lot is assayed by gas chromatography, screened for endotoxin by LAL, and tested for sterility.

Handling · research use

How to reconstitute with it.

General laboratory handling reference for reconstituting lyophilized compounds. Always follow your institution's protocols.

Step 01

Sanitize

Swab the rubber stopper of both the BAC water and the compound vial with alcohol.

Step 02

Draw solvent

Draw your target volume of BAC water into a sterile syringe.

Step 03

Add slowly

Release it down the inside wall of the compound vial — never straight onto the powder. Swirl gently; don't shake.

Step 04

Store cold

Refrigerate the reconstituted solution at 2–8°C. The benzyl alcohol keeps it bacteriostatic for up to 28 days.

Concentration, made simple.

Concentration (mg/mL) = compound mass (mg) ÷ BAC water added (mL). Use this to plan your working dilutions for in-vitro research.

5 mg ÷ 2 mL  =  2.5 mg/mL
10 mg ÷ 2 mL  =  5.0 mg/mL

Add to cart
What is bacteriostatic water?
Sterile water preserved with 0.9% benzyl alcohol. The preservative inhibits microbial growth, which is why it's the standard solvent for reconstituting lyophilized research compounds and can be drawn from more than once.
How is it different from sterile / WFI water?
Preservative-free sterile water has no antimicrobial and is intended for single use. Bacteriostatic water's 0.9% benzyl alcohol suppresses microbial growth, supporting multiple draws from one vial — typically within 28 days of first puncture.
How long does it last after opening?
Stored refrigerated at 2–8°C, benzyl-alcohol-preserved water is commonly used within 28 days of first puncture. Discard if you notice cloudiness or particulates.
Which size should I choose?
3 mL suits a single reconstitution; 10 mL — our most popular — covers several. Both are the same GC-verified 0.9% benzyl alcohol solution.
How is quality verified?
Every lot is assayed by gas chromatography (benzyl alcohol content and purity), screened for endotoxin by LAL, and tested for sterility. The batch-specific Certificate of Analysis is included free and downloadable above.
Is this for human use?
No. BAC water is sold strictly for research, laboratory and educational purposes only. It is not approved for human consumption, veterinary use, or any therapeutic application. By purchasing you confirm you are a qualified researcher and will comply with all applicable laws.
